Female White-Collar Crime Divas-Mordern Day Thieves
I was on the FBI website reviewing the information for this post. It blew me away the colossal number of fraud cases that have and are occurring with federal funds, especially those from Medicaid. Just this case is over $4 million dollars. Unfortunate for this woman, she got slapped with 16 years of federal time . . . . There is no parole in the federal prison system. The saddest part was the children that these funds were earmarked for didn’t receive the benefits.
Today’s CrimeDiva, Schella Logan Hope, 47, of Brunswick, Georgia, was convicted of 54 counts of health care fraud, aggravated identity theft, and money laundering offenses for her role in a multi-million-dollar Medicaid fraud conspiracy, and was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
According to records, Ms Hope was a licensed dietitian and owner of Hope Nutritional Services. It was noted that from 2005 through 2011, Ms. Hope used the identities of thousands of needy children that were enrolled in Head Start programs in the state of Georgia. Additionally, Ms. Hope fabricated patient files, falsified prescriptions, and submitted over $4 million in claims to Medicaid for services not provided. Just like a CrimeDiva, Ms. Hope used the money for luxury automobiles, designer clothing, luxury vacations, and other pricey things.
In addition to the sentence of imprisonment, Ms. Hope was ordered to pay more than $4 million in restitution to Medicaid and serve three years of supervised release after imprisonment.
Oh my goodness, this was a very stiff sentence compared to those which I have posted with similar or more money amounts. I’m assuming the judge meant this to be an example to others that if you cross the line into crime be ready to do some long, hard time. I find this interested, because the feds usually try to make a deal for a guilty plea. I guess Ms. Hope thought she would fight it, but when you lose this is what usually happens . . . a lot of time. This is the very reason why I do this blog that is, to wake women up from making bad decisions that will land them in these nightmare situations of going to prison.
