Female White-Collar Crime Divas-Mordern Day Thieves
This is really sad and disturbing–a niece stealing from her elderly aunt; but it’s nothing new in the world of crime. What really blows my mind is the niece is 75 years old. I guess she doesn’t mind spending her remaining years in prison, or did she take a gamble that her age would get her mercy from the court and not be given prison time. At any rate, a crime was been committed.
Today’s CrimeDiva, Margaret Sue Beam, 75, pleaded guilty to embezzlement by misuse of power of attorney. She admitted her role in stealing over $800,000 from her aunt. [Wow! $800,000-all the money in the world her aunt had.]
According to records, the 96-year-old woman went to the police to complaint that money was missing from her checking accounts, it was discovered that Ms. Beam [who had power of attorney]had squandered the money and cashed in several savings bonds. [I wonder do people think just because you are old, you are gullible.]
During the investigation it was discovered that Ms. Beam had purchased a new home in an affluent neighborhood in Connecticut worth over $700,000. Ms. Beam admitted to using the money for her own benefit, and that after purchasing the home, she obtained a reverse mortgage on the home for $500,000 that paid her monthly installments.
This is the harm Ms. Beam caused her aunt– “Because of the greed by the defendant in this case, the elderly victim is left with minimal income and no savings. She is barely meeting her monthly obligations, and on top of that, social security has garnished her wages and the IRS is seeking back taxes. The court system is with a congressman office to remedy both of those issues.” Prosecutors stated.
Ms. Beam faces up to 10 years in prison when sentenced.
So much for family love–the aunt would have been better off trusting a stranger.
