Female White-Collar Crime Divas-Mordern Day Thieves

Punishment – Time at home!!!

This case really bothered me! Not because of the sentencing for this misguided elderly woman, but because this case involved a woman who was a part of an organization, Eastern Star, whose mission and objectives were: Charitable, Educational, Fraternal and Scientific, and to inspire Biblical examples of heroic conduct and moral values. But, not even that bothered me as much as the fact that this is a Mother and daughter involved in a crime together.

I am a mother and under no circumstances would I involve my daughter in any crime. If that was the case in this situation it is sad that the mother was a part of sending her daughter to prison. But, if the case was that the daughter involved the mother I still bring the source of the problem back to the mother, for not teaching her daughter better. No you cannot control what your child does once he/she is an adult, but setting a good example, and teaching moral values usually will set the stage in their decision-making as adults. I do not know who involved whom, and we are not here to judge, but to present examples to other women of the consequences of making a bad decision.

The CrimeDiva for today is, Marilee Garrison, 81. Yes . . . she’s 81 years old. My heart goes out to her; to have been involved in such a devastating legal situation so late in her life. It is practical that she will not be doing her time in prison, but four years on home confinement; which in my opinion is a practice the legal system should implement more often when such options are available.

According to the record, Ms. Garrison was once a leader for the Evansville, Eastern Star organization. The report states that Ms. Garrison and her daughter, who was sentenced to three years in prison, embezzled more than $290,000 from the Eastern Star via issuing dozens of unauthorized checks and forged bank statements to conceal their crime.

Apparently, at the court hearings many former friends were in attentive. Some clearly were upset that their trusted friend and member of their organization had abused her psotion and they will now have to run their organization without those needed funds.

Something more valuable than the money is the close friendship that is now lost. Her daughter also will not be around, to be a part of her golden years.

As I’ve said many times that so much is lost when someone involves themselves in a white-collar crime. They fail to see how their life interconnect to others and the rippling effect their actions have on their love ones, friends and the community.

Check pictureWhen you take some ‘me’ time this weekend, I invite you to check out this eBook, The Check. This true story, takes place in the Northwest.
