New Zealand Woman Convicted of Trade Me Scam!

acarz     There is no where, where white-collar crime does not exist. Today’s crime  occurred in New Zealand, on one of its largest online trading/selling company.

A Wairarapa, woman, 40, whose name was legally withheld to protect her young son’s identity, pled guilty to three counts of deception and one count of using forged documents.

According to official records, this woman sold a car on the Trade Me site and required the buyer to make the deposit directly into her accounts. She was supposed to arrange the delivery of the cars, but never did. After the vehicle was not delivered the buyer called and talked to the defendant by phone. She said her stepbrother had been killed and that she had to attend the funeral. She agreed to transfer the money back into the man’s account. After several days the money had not been returned. The man contacted the defendant again and was given more excuses. Another meeting was arranged, but the defendant did not show. The man continued to try to get his money. He received a text saying her father had agreed to pay the money back for her and she gave him a cellphone number to call. The man spoke to someone posing as the defendant’s father and agreed to meet, but the person did not show. Sixty-seven texts went on back and forth until contact stopped altogether.

Another man saw an advertisement for a Ford Ka on Trade Me and paid the defendant $225 as a deposit. The man was told the car would be delivered, however it did not arrive on the agreed day and he was unable to contact the defendant. The defendant shortly, terminated her tenancy agreement for a rental property where she lived, and forged the signature of her landlord to receive $1060, which was her deposit. Eventually the defendant met with the victims and admitted to them it was a scam and the money had been spent.

She is awaiting sentencing and the judge Broadmore said, the defendant had “been committing this kind of fraud for years”.
