Diamonds stolen by Executive – $1.3 million stolen!

“They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. I guess that could be true unless the jewelry does not belong to you.”

Today’s CrimeDiva, Ingrid Lederhaas-Okun, 46, of Darien, Connecticut, was arrested and accused of wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen property, by criminal complaint. (Whenever you read or hear the words “interstate” involved in a crime you know that it is a federal case – it’s their jurisdiction).

According to officials, Ms. Lederhaas-Okun was an executive for Tiffany & Company of New York, in the product development department. It was not stated in the complaint if this thief occurred at Tiffany & Company, but it was verified that she was employed there in several positions.  At which ever location this occurred she had the authority to take jewelry to potential manufacturers to determine the cost of production, but the item was supposed to be returned to the store. It is stated that the store she worked for did a daily inventory, but that was for items worth $25,000 and above. Ms. Lederhaas-Okun allegedly took some 165 pieces, all worth under $10,000 (so there it is, the trap). In all it was reported that she sold them for over $1.3 million to a leading international buyer and reseller. (Do you think he/she should have suspected something? That is a lot of jewelry to be selling by one person.)

It is stated that she could face up to 30 years, which is more than likely overstating it. There being $1.3 million  for sentencing guidelines and a good attorney she probably will not do more than two to three years, if she pleads guilty; if she fights the case she just may get 30 years.

Some of these cases are fascinating to read.  It’s like watching the movies, but guess what? These are real life crimes.
