Female White-Collar Crime Divas-Mordern Day Thieves
“The conscience is . . . a brake, not a guide; a fence, not a way. It raises its voice after a wrong deed has been committed, but often fails to give us direction in advance of our actions.”
– Abraham Heschel
Today’s Crime Diva is from Mexico. Elba Esther Gordillo, 68, known in her country as “La Maestra, which means teacher.” She was considered to be the most powerful woman in Mexico. Ms. Gordillo was head of the Mexican teacher’s union, which has a membership of over 1.5 million.
Ms. Gordillo was recently arrested and charged with fraud and organized crime. She is allegedly suspected of embezzling over $200 million. Her arrest came on the day that the government enacted a major education reform. It was stated that the arrest is not politically motivated and could be the start of the privatization of education in Mexico. The reform will require teachers to undergo regular assessments, something that has never been done before. This will better equipment students to compete globally.
The Mexican legal authorities state that teachers are the pillars of the education system, but that Ms. Gordillo has hurt the union she lead. Her lavish lifestyle was allegedly funded by her misuse of the education workers funds. It is reported that she owned numerous homes including two mansions in San Diego, CA., she had high-end department stores accounts spending millions, she had expensive plastic surgery done in the US, and owned a private plane; none of which she would have been able to afford on her salary.
Ms. Gordillo had been the head of the teacher’s union for over twenty years and had the influence to persuade her members to vote as a single block.
It will be interesting to see how this case plays out. Though its indicated that this is not politically motivated I find it hard to believe it is not in part. There was no mentioned as to the amount of time Ms. Gordillo would face in prison if found guilty. Her health is report as precarious at this writing
The mission of this site is to prevent professional, educated, and career-minded females from committing white-collar crimes; to educate, and confabulate with others who have an interest in this epic situation and who has a desire to make a difference.
